Under Pennsylvania's Home Improvement Consumer Protection Act, contractors who do $5,000 or more of home improvement work a year must register with the Office of Attorney General, carry at least $50,000 each in personal injury and property damage liability coverage, and show their PA registration number on ads, estimates and contracts. Check the number on the Attorney General's contractor search, insist on a signed written contract for any job over $500, and ask whether the City of Williamsport Bureau of Codes or your borough or township needs a permit for the work.
